Baking with Santiago of the Seas

In celebration of the new Santiago of the Seas new episode, "Tómas' Birthday Surprise," Julianna made a special dessert that is very popular at birthday parties in our family: Tres Leches Cake!

Have you ever tried a Tres Leches Cake? It is a spongy cake soaked in three different types of milk. Julianna made it kid-friendly by using a boxed cake mix.

Recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix

  • 1 can evaporated milk

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk

  • 3/4 cup half and half

  • 1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven and prepare cake mix according to package directions for a 9×13 sheet cake.

  • When you pull the cake out of the oven, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes throughout the cake while it is still hot. Immediately pour the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and half and half over the cake, taking care to drizzle some in each hole.

  • Let the cake cool on the counter for an hour, then chill for another hour while you whip the cream or set out the whipped topping. Once the cake is cool, spread whipped cream over the top and chill for an additional two hours before serving.* Store in the fridge for up to five days.
